In Star Trek: The Next Generation, what device helps Geordi La Forge see?

The story behind the answer

In Star Trek: The Next Generation, Geordi La Forge sees with a device called a VISOR.

The VISOR, short for Visual Instrument and Sensory Organ Replacement, is worn across Geordi’s eyes. It detects electromagnetic wavelengths beyond normal human vision and sends information directly into his nervous system. As a result, Geordi can perceive energy patterns, heat signatures and other data that ordinary eyes cannot see.

The device is fictional, but its function became a defining part of Geordi’s character. It also created a recurring storytelling limitation: the VISOR could overload, be damaged or expose Geordi to harmful signals. The show sometimes used it to turn invisible or unusual phenomena into something he could interpret.

In later seasons and films, Geordi receives artificial eyes instead of relying on the VISOR. That change is why some viewers remember him as having cybernetic eyes, while the VISOR remains the best-known technology associated with his early Starfleet career.
