In Star Trek: The Motion Picture, the machine intelligence threatening Earth is V'Ger.
V’Ger appears as an enormous cloud of energy and machinery moving through space toward Earth. It destroys or disables vessels that approach it and seeks contact with its creator. The Enterprise crew eventually discovers that V’Ger began as Voyager 6, a 20th-century NASA probe, before unknown extraterrestrial machines found and enhanced it.
The probe’s original mission was to collect information and return to Earth. Its transformation gives it vast intelligence and technological capabilities, but it also leaves V’Ger unable to understand human existence or emotion. The film’s climax depends on resolving that gap between information and experience.
V’Ger is not the same artificial intelligence as Nomad, the probe seen in The Original Series episode “The Changeling.” Both are dangerous intelligent probes, but they belong to different stories and have different origins.
