In Star Trek IV, what city do the crew travel to in the 1980s? They travel to San Francisco.
The crew arrives in San Francisco in 1986 after using a slingshot maneuver around the Sun to travel back from the 23rd century. Their mission is to locate two humpback whales, whose songs may answer an alien probe threatening Earth in their own time.
Much of the movie uses recognizable San Francisco locations, including Golden Gate Park, the Bay Area, and San Francisco Bay. The crew hides their cloaked Klingon Bird of Prey in the park while splitting up to find whales, obtain equipment, and recover the energy needed to restore their damaged dilithium crystals.
The setting is sometimes confused with Sausalito because Kirk and Spock visit an aquarium there to meet Dr. Gillian Taylor and the whales. Sausalito is a separate city across the bay, but the question’s broad destination is San Francisco. The film’s location shooting and fish-out-of-water comedy made the city one of its most memorable characters.
