In Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan, the Genesis Device can transform a lifeless world into a habitable one.
The device is developed by Dr. Carol Marcus and her scientific team as a revolutionary terraforming technology. In the film, it is intended to reorganize matter and create a living environment on a barren planet. The name comes from the biblical idea of creation, reflecting the device’s ability to produce a new ecosystem from an apparently dead location.
The Genesis Device is also the cause of the film’s central conflict. Khan Noonien Singh steals it because he sees it as a weapon, while Starfleet wants to control its use. At the film’s conclusion, the device activates on the damaged planetoid Regula I, producing the Genesis Planet.
It is often confused with a generic terraforming machine, but Genesis is the specific named technology. “Genesis Torpedo” describes its delivery system in some contexts, while the device itself is the creation technology.
