In Stanley Kubrick’s Spartacus, who wrote the screenplay?
Answer
Dalton Trumbo
Answer
Dalton Trumbo
In Stanley Kubrick’s Spartacus, the screenplay was written by Dalton Trumbo.
Trumbo adapted Howard Fast’s 1951 novel about the historical slave revolt led by Spartacus. He was one of the Hollywood Ten, a group of film professionals who were cited for contempt of Congress after refusing to answer questions about alleged Communist affiliations.
During the production of Spartacus, Trumbo was still working under the effects of Hollywood’s blacklist. Producer and star Kirk Douglas publicly supported crediting him, helping restore Trumbo’s screen credit and making the film an important moment in the blacklist’s decline.
The screenplay is sometimes confused with the work of other writers connected with the production. Howard Fast wrote the source novel, while Peter Ustinov contributed to the film’s development and played Batiatus. Stanley Kubrick directed the 1960 film after replacing Anthony Mann early in production.
