In Stanley Kubrick’s Paths of Glory, which French regiment is ordered to attack the Anthill?

The story behind the answer

In Stanley Kubrick’s Paths of Glory, the 701st Regiment is ordered to attack the German position known as the Anthill. The regiment’s soldiers are French troops serving on the Western Front during the First World War.

The attack is presented as an almost impossible assignment. After the soldiers fail to capture the position, General Mireau demands that men from the regiment be court-martialed for cowardice. Colonel Dax, played by Kirk Douglas, defends the accused soldiers and challenges the military hierarchy that made the failed assault inevitable.

The regiment number helps distinguish this question from the film’s broader setting. Paths of Glory is based on Humphrey Cobb’s 1935 novel and was released in 1957. Although the film depicts the French Army, it was banned in France for many years because of its critical portrayal of military authority and wartime justice.
