In Stanley Kubrick’s Full Metal Jacket, Leonard Lawrence is nicknamed Gomer Pyle.
Vincent D’Onofrio plays Lawrence, a recruit whose struggle with Marine Corps training becomes a major part of the film’s first half. His nickname, Gomer Pyle, is given by the drill instructor Hartman and references the character from the American television sitcom Gomer Pyle, U.S.M.C.
The nickname is distinct from the recruit’s real name. Lawrence is also called “Pyle” by other Marines, but Gomer Pyle is the recognizable full nickname used in the film. His arc illustrates the dehumanizing pressure of military boot camp and the consequences of sustained humiliation.
Full Metal Jacket then shifts to Vietnam, where Matthew Modine’s character, Joker, serves as a military journalist. The two-part structure is why viewers sometimes confuse the names of the recruit-training characters with the later combat correspondents.
