In Stanley Kubrick’s Eyes Wide Shut, what is the name of the secret masked gathering Bill attends?

The secret masked gathering Bill attends in Stanley Kubrick’s Eyes Wide Shut is the Somerton masked ball.

After obtaining a password, Dr. Bill Harford travels to Somerton, a country estate, where he encounters a ritualized gathering of masked participants. The scene is one of the film’s central mysteries and creates the atmosphere of secrecy, privilege, and danger.

The event is often called the masked ball or the Somerton gathering. Bill’s presence is discovered when he fails to belong to the group, and a woman intervenes on his behalf before he is forced to leave.

Eyes Wide Shut was adapted from Arthur Schnitzler’s 1926 novella Dream Story. Kubrick transposed the story from Vienna to contemporary New York, while preserving its themes of marriage, desire, jealousy, fantasy, and hidden social worlds.
