In Stanley Kubrick’s A Clockwork Orange, Malcolm McDowell plays the protagonist Alex DeLarge.
Alex is a violent young gang leader whose story examines free will, state control, and the consequences of conditioning. He narrates much of the film in Nadsat, a slang language used by Alex and his friends, while also committing crimes with his gang, known as the droogs.
The character comes from Anthony Burgess’s 1962 novel A Clockwork Orange. Kubrick’s adaptation retains the novel’s distinctive language and moral questions but presents them through stylized violence, classical music, and highly controlled visual compositions.
McDowell was 27 when the film was released in 1971. His performance made Alex one of the most recognizable antiheroes in 20th-century film, though the movie’s violence and influence on popular culture also generated controversy. Alex’s name is sometimes shortened in discussion, but the film’s credited character name is Alex DeLarge.
