In “Snow-White and Rose-Red,” the enchanted bear is transformed back into a prince. The bear has been cursed by a wicked dwarf who stole his treasure and changed him into an animal.
The sisters first meet him during winter, when he asks to warm himself by their fire. He returns throughout the season, then leaves to protect his treasure. During summer, Snow-White and Rose-Red repeatedly rescue the dwarf, who responds with ingratitude.
When the bear finally confronts the dwarf, he kills him with one blow. The curse immediately ends, revealing the bear’s human form and princely identity. Snow-White marries him, while Rose-Red marries his brother.
This tale is often confused with “Snow White,” the story of the princess and the seven dwarfs. Despite the similar name, “Snow-White and Rose-Red” is a separate German tale, classified as ATU 426.
