In “Shut Up and Dance,” Jerome Flynn plays Hector. Hector is a middle-aged man who becomes entangled with Kenny after both are blackmailed by anonymous hackers.
Hector is threatened over an arranged encounter with a sex worker and fears that his wife, Penny, will discover his infidelity and seek custody of their children. The hackers force him and Kenny to follow increasingly dangerous instructions, including driving to a location, helping rob a bank, and destroying their getaway car.
Flynn’s performance makes Hector abrasive, frightened, and pragmatic under pressure. He insists on driving during the bank robbery, leaving Kenny to enter the bank. The episode premiered alongside the rest of Black Mirror’s third series on Netflix in 2016. Viewers sometimes confuse Hector with Kenny, the younger central character played by Alex Lawther, but Flynn’s character is specifically Hector.
