In Schindler’s List (1993), which director made the film about Oskar Schindler?

The story behind the answer

Steven Spielberg directed Schindler’s List (1993), a historical drama about German industrialist Oskar Schindler.

The film is based on Thomas Keneally’s 1982 novel Schindler’s Ark and follows Schindler’s efforts to protect Jewish workers during the Holocaust. Liam Neeson plays Schindler, while Ben Kingsley portrays his accountant Itzhak Stern. The story is set mainly in occupied Poland during World War II.

Spielberg filmed much of the movie in black and white, creating a stark documentary-like visual style. A few carefully selected color images, including the girl in the red coat, stand out against the monochrome photography. The film was shot largely in Kraków and nearby locations.

Schindler’s List won seven Academy Awards, including Best Picture and Best Director. It is sometimes confused with Roman Polanski’s The Pianist, another acclaimed Holocaust drama released a decade later.
