In Save the World, what percentage of Earth's population disappears?

The story behind the answer

In Save the World, 98% of Earth’s population disappears.

That catastrophe is the event that sets Fortnite’s original cooperative campaign in motion. A strange worldwide storm covers the planet, most humans vanish, and zombie-like creatures called husks begin attacking the survivors.

The remaining population establishes bases protected by storm shields. Players take the role of commanders who search for survivors, gather materials, build defenses, craft weapons and traps, and protect objectives from waves of husks. The campaign therefore combines survival, exploration, shooting, crafting and tower-defense mechanics.

The figure is part of the game’s fictional premise, not a claim about a real disaster or a general description of Fortnite Battle Royale. Battle Royale uses a different setup centered on a shrinking storm and competition among players, while Save the World follows a cooperative story about rebuilding civilization after the disappearance.
