In Russian superstition, what do travelers traditionally do before leaving home to ensure a safe journey?

The story behind the answer

In Russian superstition, travelers traditionally sit silently for a moment before leaving home to ensure a safe journey.

The custom is commonly called присесть на дорожку, meaning roughly “sit down for the road.” Before departing, everyone pauses and sits quietly, often near the entrance, for a brief moment. The pause is treated as a way to collect one’s thoughts, remember forgotten items, and encourage a safe trip.

Although it is described as a superstition, the practice also has a practical explanation. A final pause can give travelers time to check passports, tickets, keys, medication, or luggage before they leave. The ritual therefore combines magical protection with a useful departure checklist.

The custom is still recognizable in Russian-speaking families and is often performed even by people who do not literally believe the pause changes fate. It is different from sitting on luggage, another travel-related practice found in some cultures. The defining action is briefly sitting down before setting off, not a particular chair, phrase, or food.
