In rugby union, what is the name of the line marking the centre of the field?
Answer
Halfway line
Answer
Halfway line
The line marking the centre of a rugby union field is called the halfway line.
It divides the playing area into two halves and runs across the field between the touchlines. The halfway line is especially important at kick-offs, because the team restarting play kicks from the centre of this line.
Rugby union fields also include two 22-metre lines, two goal lines, and two dead-ball lines. These markings serve different tactical and legal purposes, so the halfway line should not be confused with the goal line, which separates the field of play from the in-goal area.
The halfway line remains central even when teams change ends at half-time. Each side attacks one in-goal area in the first half and the opposite area in the second.
