In rugby union, how many points is a successful conversion worth?

The story behind the answer

In rugby union, a successful conversion is worth two points.

A conversion follows a try and gives the scoring team an opportunity to add to its total. The kick is taken from a line perpendicular to the goal line through the point where the try was scored. The kicker may use a place kick or drop kick, and the ball must pass over the crossbar and between the goalposts.

Because the kick is aligned with the try’s location, scoring near the middle of the goal line generally creates an easier angle than scoring close to a touchline. Teams therefore value both finishing tries and choosing attacking routes that improve the possible conversion position.

A converted try is worth seven points altogether: five for the try and two for the conversion. A conversion is different from a penalty goal or drop goal, each of which is worth three points in modern rugby union.
