In rugby union, how many points does a successful drop goal score?

The story behind the answer

In rugby union, a successful drop goal scores three points.

A drop goal is scored when a player drops the ball onto the ground and kicks it as it rises, sending it over the crossbar and between the goalposts. Unlike a conversion, it can be attempted during general play and does not require a try to have been scored first. The ball must pass over the crossbar before it touches the ground again.

Drop goals are often used late in close matches because they provide a quick scoring opportunity without needing to build a position for a try. They were once more common in elite rugby, but tactical changes and defensive pressure have made them comparatively rare. A penalty goal also scores three points, while a try is worth five and a conversion is worth two.
