In rugby union, how long is a standard match, excluding stoppage time?

The story behind the answer

A standard rugby union match lasts 80 minutes, excluding stoppage time.

The match is divided into two halves of 40 minutes. A halftime interval separates the halves, and the referee determines when play resumes. Unlike sports with a continuously running game clock visible to spectators, rugby union’s referee manages stoppages and the official playing time.

Time may be added for injuries, substitutions, disciplinary incidents, video reviews, and other interruptions. A half normally ends when the ball becomes dead after the scheduled time, although certain phases can continue under the laws. This is why the final whistle does not always occur exactly at the 40-minute mark.

Knockout matches that are level after regulation can use extra time, commonly two 10-minute periods each way, followed by a kicking competition if necessary under the competition regulations. Extra time is not part of the standard 80-minute match.
