In rugby league, how many points is a successful drop goal worth?

The story behind the answer

In rugby league, a successful drop goal is worth one point.

A drop goal is scored when a player drop-kicks the ball over the opponents’ crossbar and between the goalposts during open play. The ball must touch the ground immediately before it is kicked, which distinguishes the attempt from a place kick.

Drop goals are often used late in close matches because they provide a single point and can immediately break a tie. They are especially associated with tactical attacking play near the opposition’s goal line. A drop goal is not the same as a conversion: a conversion follows a try and is worth two points, while a penalty goal is also worth two points.

The one-point value has remained a defining feature of rugby league scoring, although the strategic importance of drop goals varies between competitions and eras. The related rugby union scoring system also awards one point for a drop goal, but the sports otherwise have different laws and match structures.
