In rugby league, how many points is a standard try worth?

The story behind the answer

In rugby league, a standard try is worth 4 points.

A try is scored when an attacking player grounds the ball on or beyond the opponents’ goal line, provided the play satisfies the laws. The scoring team can then attempt a conversion, normally worth 2 additional points. A successful try and conversion therefore produce six points, although the try itself remains worth four.

This value distinguishes rugby league from rugby union, where a try is worth five points. Rugby league’s four-point try has been part of the code’s scoring identity for many years, while other scoring values have changed as the laws evolved. Kicks can also score points through goals and field goals, depending on the circumstances.

The referee or video referee must decide whether the ball was grounded legally. Common points of debate include whether a player had control, whether the ball touched the ground first, and whether the player remained in the field of play.
