In “Rocky V,” Adrian tries to convince Rocky to stay retired from boxing.
After Rocky returns from fighting Ivan Drago, he experiences physical problems caused by the punishment he took in the bout. He also discovers that his accountant has lost or mismanaged his fortune, leaving the Balboa family financially devastated. Rocky considers fighting again against Union Cane to recover their money, but Adrian urges him to see a doctor first.
Rocky is diagnosed with cavum septi pellucidi, a form of brain damage associated in the film with repeated head trauma. The diagnosis means he cannot safely continue boxing, and Adrian argues that his health and family matter more than restoring their former wealth. Her opposition is rooted in concern, not a desire to control Rocky’s career.
A common mix-up is George Washington Duke, who tries to lure Rocky back into the ring, or Rocky’s later decision to train Tommy Gunn. Duke wants Rocky to fight; Adrian is the character who argues that he should remain retired. Rocky eventually accepts retirement as a boxer and becomes a trainer instead.
