The song plays during Rocky’s preparation for his fight with Ivan Drago. Its lyrics and energetic rock arrangement match the film’s Cold War atmosphere and the emotional pressure surrounding Apollo Creed’s death.
Survivor had already contributed “Eye of the Tiger” to Rocky III, so the group is strongly associated with the franchise. However, “Eye of the Tiger” is not the song used for Rocky’s main Rocky IV training sequence. “Burning Heart” was released as a single from the Rocky IV soundtrack and became a major chart success.
The montage contrasts Rocky’s outdoor, improvised training in the Soviet countryside with Drago’s laboratory-based preparation. Music is a defining feature of the Rocky films, but each sequel uses a different group of prominent songs.
