In Rocky III, Apollo Creed becomes Rocky Balboa’s friend and trainer after Mickey’s death. Apollo helps Rocky rebuild his confidence and prepare for a rematch with Clubber Lang.
The arrangement is a major turning point in their relationship. Apollo was Rocky’s opponent in the first two films, but the two men gradually developed mutual respect after their fights. In Rocky III, Apollo uses his experience and knowledge of Rocky to teach him speed, movement, and a new training style.
Duke Evers remains involved as Apollo’s trainer, but Apollo himself takes the central mentoring role. Mickey Goldmill dies after the first fight with Clubber Lang, so he cannot train Rocky for the rematch.
This partnership becomes important beyond Rocky III. Apollo continues as Rocky’s close friend until his death in Rocky IV.
