In Rocky III, Rocky’s first opponent after he becomes champion is Clubber Lang.
Clubber Lang is a powerful and aggressive contender who publicly challenges Rocky for the world heavyweight title. Rocky has become a celebrity and has successfully defended the championship several times, but Lang believes the champion has avoided truly dangerous competition.
The first fight takes place after a confrontation outside the arena where Mickey suffers a heart attack. Rocky enters the bout distracted and emotionally distressed, while Lang is focused and physically imposing. Lang defeats Rocky by technical knockout.
Rocky later works with Apollo Creed to prepare for a rematch. Apollo teaches him to use speed and footwork rather than relying mainly on endurance and power. Clubber Lang is played by Mr. T, who became one of the franchise’s most recognizable antagonists.
