In Rocky Balboa, Mason Dixon challenges the retired Rocky to an exhibition match.
Dixon is the reigning heavyweight champion, but his reputation suffers because fans believe he has not faced a truly memorable opponent. A computer simulation comparing Dixon with Rocky generates public interest, and the idea of an exhibition bout develops from that publicity.
Rocky is no longer an active champion and is still grieving Adrian's death. Even so, he decides to accept the fight after considering what boxing means to him and whether he can still compete.
Antonio Tarver, a professional light-heavyweight champion, played Dixon. The casting gave the fictional champion a genuine boxing background. The bout is officially presented as an exhibition, allowing Rocky to return to the ring without becoming a full-time professional again.
