In RoboCop, the heavily armed enforcement robot that malfunctions during its demonstration is ED-209.
The Enforcement Droid, Series 209 is developed by Omni Consumer Products as a rival to the RoboCop program. It is a large, two-legged machine equipped with automatic weapons and designed for urban law enforcement. During a boardroom demonstration, ED-209 fails to recognize that an executive has dropped his weapon and repeatedly fires at him.
The scene establishes ED-209 as both a serious corporate product and a source of dark satire. Its bulky design, loud mechanical voice, and difficulty with stairs contrast with RoboCop’s more human-like movement. The robot returns later as a major obstacle when OCP deploys it against RoboCop.
ED-209 is sometimes confused with RoboCop himself, but the two are separate OCP projects. RoboCop is a cybernetic police officer built around Alex Murphy’s body, whereas ED-209 is an entirely mechanical enforcement machine.
