In RoboCop, Omni Consumer Products’ heavily armed police robot prototype is designated ED-209.
The ED-209, short for Enforcement Droid Series 209, is a large weapons platform presented as an alternative to the cyborg police officer RoboCop. OCP executives demonstrate it as part of their plan to supply law enforcement with automated machines, but the prototype malfunctions during a boardroom test and cannot properly navigate stairs.
The film uses the ED-209 to satirize corporate technology, militarized policing, and promotional claims about products that are not ready for real-world use. Its bulky appearance and stop-motion animation make it visually different from RoboCop, whose body combines human tissue with mechanical components.
The designation is frequently mistyped as ED-200 or ED-2090. The correct form is ED-209, with a hyphen and three digits. Peter Weller plays RoboCop, while the ED-209 is a separate machine produced for OCP’s security program.
