In RoboCop 2, the prototype robot built to replace RoboCop is called RoboCop 2.
RoboCop 2 is developed by Omni Consumer Products as part of an effort to create a new law-enforcement machine. The project uses the brain of a violent drug lord, Cain, whose personality and neurological instability create serious problems for the resulting cyborg.
The 1990 sequel follows Detroit’s continuing crime crisis and OCP’s attempt to commercialize a replacement for its original cyborg officer. RoboCop himself remains Alex Murphy, the officer rebuilt after being mortally wounded in the first film.
RoboCop 2 is often confused with ED-209, the earlier OCP enforcement prototype from the 1987 film. ED-209 is a large, heavily armed bipedal machine, while RoboCop 2 is a later cyborg project built around Cain’s brain. The sequel was directed by Irvin Kershner.
