In Robin Hobb’s fantasy novel Assassin’s Apprentice, the young royal bastard trained as an assassin is FitzChivalry Farseer.
Fitz is the illegitimate son of Prince Chivalry, heir to the Farseer throne. After his parentage becomes known, he is taken to Buckkeep and placed under the protection of King Shrewd. The king arranges for Chade, a secret royal assassin, to train him in covert work.
Fitz’s name combines his status as Chivalry’s son with his connection to the Farseer dynasty. He also possesses the Wit, a stigmatized magical bond with animals, and later develops the Skill, a hereditary form of mental magic. These abilities create conflicts beyond his assassination training and continue through Hobb’s Realm of the Elderlings novels.
