In Roald Dahl’s Matilda, what is the name of Matilda’s primary school?

The story behind the answer

In Roald Dahl’s Matilda, Matilda’s primary school is called Crunchem Hall Primary School.

The school is the main educational setting in Dahl’s 1988 children’s novel. Matilda Wormwood arrives as an exceptionally gifted child, but the school is dominated by its cruel headmistress, Miss Agatha Trunchbull. The kinder teacher, Miss Honey, recognizes Matilda’s abilities and supports her.

Crunchem Hall is fictional, and its exaggerated punishments and eccentric authority figures give the novel much of its dark comic tone. The school contrasts with Matilda’s home life, where her intelligence and love of reading are frequently dismissed.

The name is sometimes confused with the film’s wording, because adaptations and translations can use slightly different labels such as “Crunchem Hall Elementary School.” The standard English novel reference is Crunchem Hall Primary School. The story was adapted into a 1996 film and later into a stage musical and a 2022 musical film.
