In Rick Riordan’s The Lightning Thief, Percy Jackson attends Yancy Academy at the start of the story.
Yancy Academy is a fictional boarding school in New York where Percy is a troubled sixth-grader. He struggles with schoolwork, disciplinary problems, and strange events that other people seem unable to remember. His Latin teacher, Mr. Brunner, and friend Grover Underwood become important to the story.
A class field trip to the Metropolitan Museum of Art leads to Percy’s first direct encounter with Greek mythology. After an attack by Mrs. Dodds, Percy is expelled from Yancy Academy and begins learning that the ancient gods are real.
The school is an early setting rather than Percy’s long-term home. He later travels to Camp Half-Blood, a training camp for demigods. Readers sometimes confuse Yancy Academy with Camp Half-Blood because both are major educational settings in the series.
