In professional sumo wrestling, the title awarded to an outstanding wrestler below the champion ranks is sanshō.
Sanshō means “three prizes” and refers to the special prizes presented in the makuuchi division. The standard prizes are shukun-shō for outstanding performance, kantō-shō for fighting spirit, and ginō-shō for technique. More than one prize may be awarded at a tournament, and a prize may sometimes go unawarded.
Eligibility generally focuses on wrestlers ranked below the san'yaku ranks, although the awards recognize performance rather than simply a tournament victory. A wrestler usually must have a winning record to receive one.
Sanshō is different from the Emperor’s Cup, which goes to the top-division tournament winner. It is also different from a kinboshi, the special official credit earned by a maegashira who defeats a yokozuna.
