In professional sumo wrestling, the ranking list is called the banzuke.
A banzuke places wrestlers in a hierarchy before each official tournament. It lists the divisions and the wrestlers’ ranks and often includes judges, referees, and other officials. The document is traditionally written in dense calligraphy, giving it a distinctive appearance.
Rank changes are determined by tournament performance. Wrestlers with winning records generally rise, while those with losing records generally fall, although the exact movement depends on rank and results. The banzuke is therefore both a guide to the tournament and a formal record of status.
Banzuke should not be confused with the dohyo, the raised ring where bouts take place. Nor is it the same as kimarite, which identifies a winning technique. A new banzuke is published before each honbasho.
