The kanto-sho is the professional sumo prize awarded for outstanding fighting spirit.
It is one of the three special prizes collectively called sansho. The other two are the shukun-sho, recognizing an outstanding performance, and the gino-sho, recognizing superior technique.
These prizes are awarded to wrestlers in the top makuuchi division who are not yokozuna or ozeki. A recipient normally must finish with a winning record, although the judging committee has discretion over whether a performance merits an award.
The kanto-sho is not the tournament championship. The championship is the yusho, while the special prizes recognize noteworthy performances within the tournament, often by wrestlers ranked below the sport’s two highest titles.
