In professional sumo, the top division of the ranking system is called Makuuchi.
Makuuchi is the highest of Japan’s six professional sumo divisions. It contains the sport’s most prominent wrestlers, including the titled ranks yokozuna, ōzeki, sekiwake, and komusubi, as well as the large maegashira group.
The division usually has 42 wrestlers, although the exact composition of its named ranks can change through promotion and demotion. Makuuchi wrestlers compete in the 15-day grand tournaments and normally fight once per day.
Makuuchi is often confused with makushita because the names sound similar. Makushita is the third-highest division, while juryō is directly below Makuuchi and is the second-highest division.
