In professional sumo, what is the second-highest division called?

The story behind the answer

The second-highest division in professional sumo is called jūryō.

Jūryō sits directly below makuuchi, the top division, and above makushita. Wrestlers in jūryō are salaried sekitori, meaning they receive substantially different status and privileges from wrestlers in the lower unsalaried divisions.

Jūryō wrestlers compete on every day of a regular 15-day tournament, usually fighting seven bouts. By contrast, lower-division wrestlers generally compete on fewer days. Promotion and demotion between jūryō and makushita can therefore have major effects on a wrestler’s lifestyle.

The name is written 十両 in Japanese and is often transliterated as juryo when macrons are omitted. It is a division name, not a single rank; wrestlers in it are ranked from jūryō 1 downward.
