The original adventure in Pokémon Red, Blue, and Yellow takes place in the Kanto region.
Kanto contains locations such as Pallet Town, Viridian City, Pewter City, Cerulean City, and the Indigo Plateau. The player travels through its routes and settlements while collecting eight Gym Badges and preparing for the Pokémon League.
The fictional region is based on the real Kantō region of Japan, which includes Tokyo and surrounding areas. Pokémon locations often draw on real geography while adding imaginative features such as caves, routes, Pokémon Centers, and battle Gyms.
Kanto is sometimes confused with Johto because the two regions are closely connected in the games. Pokémon Gold and Silver allow players to return to Kanto after completing the Johto story, but Kanto remains the setting of the first-generation games.
