In Pokémon Red and Blue, the player explores the Kanto region. Kanto is the setting for the first-generation Pokémon games and contains the towns, routes, caves, seas, and Gyms that form the player’s journey.
The game begins in Pallet Town, where Professor Oak gives the player a starter Pokémon. The adventure continues through locations such as Viridian City, Pewter City, Cerulean City, Lavender Town, and Saffron City before reaching the Indigo Plateau and the Pokémon League.
Kanto is based on the real Kantō region of Japan, although the game’s fictional geography is not an exact map of the real-world area. The name also appears in the original Pokémon anime and several later games, which helped make it one of the franchise’s best-known regions.
Kanto is sometimes confused with Johto because both regions appear together in Pokémon Gold and Silver. Johto is the setting of the second generation, while Red and Blue are firmly centered on Kanto and its original 151 Pokémon.
