In Pokémon Red and Blue, which fictional region is the main setting?

The story behind the answer

Kanto is the main setting of Pokémon Red and Blue.

The player begins in Pallet Town and travels across Kanto to collect eight Gym Badges, challenge the Elite Four, and pursue the title of Pokémon League Champion. The region includes familiar locations such as Viridian City, Celadon City, Fuchsia City, and Cinnabar Island.

Kanto was the first Pokémon region created for the video games. Its geography was loosely inspired by the real Kantō region of Japan, including the area around Tokyo. The game world combines towns, routes, caves, forests, seas, and islands into a connected adventure designed for exploration.

Kanto is sometimes mistaken for Johto because the two regions are directly connected in Pokémon Gold, Silver, and Crystal. Those later games allow players to revisit Kanto after completing the Johto story. In the original games, however, the entire primary journey takes place in Kanto, and the first-generation Pokédex covers its 151 introduced species.
