In Pixar's Cars, who voiced the character Doc Hudson?

The story behind the answer

Paul Newman voiced Doc Hudson in Pixar's Cars.

Doc Hudson is the town physician and judge in Radiator Springs, but his past is much more glamorous: he was the Fabulous Hudson Hornet, a celebrated race car who won three Piston Cups. Newman, himself a noted racing enthusiast and professional driver, supplied the character's voice and helped give Doc a reflective, experienced personality.

The casting connected the film to Newman's real-life interest in motorsport. He competed in sports-car racing for decades and co-founded Newman/Haas Racing, a successful open-wheel team. That background made his performance especially fitting for a story about racing, aging, and finding a new purpose.

Newman died in 2008, so Doc Hudson does not speak in Cars 2. The character appears through archival material and story references, while the Hudson Hornet remains important to the franchise's racing history.
