In Pixar's Cars, who directed Lightning McQueen's feature film debut?

The story behind the answer

John Lasseter directed Lightning McQueen's feature film debut in Pixar's Cars.

Lasseter directed the film with Joe Ranft and Dan Fogelman, and he was also one of its writers and executive creative leaders. Before Cars, he had directed Toy Story, A Bug's Life, Toy Story 2, and several Pixar shorts.

Cars was strongly influenced by Lasseter's interest in automobiles and road travel. Pixar artists researched real vehicles, racing, highways, and American roadside communities to create Radiator Springs and its inhabitants. That research helped the film combine talking cars with recognizable automotive design.

John Lasseter is sometimes confused with other major Pixar directors because the studio's early films shared many creative staff members. Brad Bird directed The Incredibles and Ratatouille, Pete Docter directed Monsters, Inc. and Up, and Andrew Stanton directed Finding Nemo and WALL-E. Lasseter also returned as a director for Cars 2.
