In Pixar’s Cars, Lightning McQueen initially races for the Rust-eze team in the Piston Cup.
Rust-eze is presented as a fictional product that promotes rusty car treatment. Its sponsorship places McQueen in a bright red race car with the number 95, and the team’s distinctive branding remains closely associated with him throughout the series.
McQueen begins the first film unhappy with his sponsor and eager to replace Rust-eze with the prestigious Dinoco team. His attitude changes after his time in Radiator Springs, where he learns to value relationships and community over a simple career upgrade. Rust-eze later becomes a much more positive part of his racing identity.
Dinoco is a particularly plausible wrong answer because it is the coveted sponsor McQueen wants in the original film. However, McQueen does not begin the story as a Dinoco racer. Rust-eze sponsors him at the start, while Dinoco is associated with The King and later with McQueen’s possible future.
