In Pixar’s Cars, which retired racing legend is voiced by Paul Newman?

In Pixar’s Cars, Paul Newman voices the retired racing legend Doc Hudson.

Doc is the judge and medical doctor of Radiator Springs, but Lightning McQueen eventually discovers that he once raced as the Fabulous Hudson Hornet. Doc won three Piston Cups before a crash ended his competitive career and left him feeling forgotten by the racing world.

The character is based on the real Hudson Hornet, a celebrated American automobile associated with stock-car racing in the early 1950s. The Fabulous Hudson Hornet nickname in the film echoes real racing history, including the Hudson Hornet’s success in NASCAR.

Paul Newman was himself a well-known motorsport enthusiast and competitive racing driver. His participation gave Doc’s racing history an especially meaningful connection to the actor. Doc’s story is also central to Lightning’s development: the young racer learns that experience, teamwork, and respect matter more than celebrity alone.
