In Pixar’s Cars, which retired race car becomes the judge of Lightning McQueen’s community service?

The story behind the answer

In Pixar’s Cars, Doc Hudson becomes the judge of Lightning McQueen’s community service.

After Lightning damages Radiator Springs’ main road, a local court orders him to repair it. Doc Hudson, the town’s respected medical car and judge, oversees the punishment and assigns Lightning the work. Their early relationship is tense because Doc recognizes Lightning’s arrogance and resents his disregard for the town.

Doc later reveals that he was once the Fabulous Hudson Hornet, a celebrated racer whose career ended after a serious crash. His history gives him firsthand knowledge of racing fame, disappointment, and the cost of being forgotten.

Paul Newman voiced Doc Hudson, making the role especially notable because Newman was also a real-life racing enthusiast. Doc is not the same character as The King, who remains an active champion during the film’s opening racing storyline.
