Doc Hudson becomes Lightning McQueen’s mentor in Pixar’s Cars.
Doc is a Hudson Hornet who hides his former racing career while serving as Radiator Springs’ town doctor. He initially dislikes McQueen’s reckless attitude, but he eventually teaches the newcomer that racing depends on control, patience, and respect rather than speed alone.
The character’s history is based on the real Hudson Hornet, a car famous for its success in early stock-car racing. In the film’s backstory, Doc won three Piston Cups before a serious crash ended his career. Doc Hudson was voiced by Paul Newman, whose own reputation as a racing enthusiast added special significance to the role. Newman’s final feature-film voice performance was in Cars.
