In Pixar’s Cars, the Piston Cup is the final race Lightning McQueen enters.
The Piston Cup is the film’s fictional stock-car racing championship, modeled in broad terms on NASCAR competition. At the beginning of the story, Lightning is a talented but inexperienced rookie who is tied with veteran racers The King and Chick Hicks for the championship lead. A three-way tiebreaking race is arranged at the Los Angeles International Speedway.
Lightning’s stay in Radiator Springs changes how he approaches the event. He learns racing techniques from Doc Hudson and gains support from the town. During the final race, he stops to help The King after Chick causes a crash, sacrificing the championship victory but earning lasting respect.
Chick Hicks crosses the finish line first, but Lightning refuses to accept the Dinoco sponsorship because of Chick’s conduct. The race is therefore important not only as a sporting finale but also as the moment Lightning demonstrates his new character.
