Doc Hudson is the legendary racer revealed to be Radiator Springs’ town doctor in Pixar’s Cars.
Doc initially appears to be a stern Hudson Hornet who serves as Radiator Springs’ judge and medical professional. Later, McQueen discovers that Doc once competed as the Fabulous Hudson Hornet and won three Piston Cups. A serious crash ended his racing career, and the racing world moved on without him.
Doc’s history explains his hostility toward McQueen’s boastful attitude. He recognizes the rookie’s speed but distrusts the attention and pressure surrounding modern racing. His eventual decision to help McQueen gives the film an important mentor relationship.
Doc Hudson was voiced by Paul Newman, the Oscar-winning actor and accomplished race-car enthusiast. The character’s name and racing history are inspired by the real Hudson Hornet, a car associated with early stock-car racing success, although Doc himself is fictional.
