In Pixar's Cars, which legendary racer becomes Lightning McQueen's mentor in Radiator Springs?

The story behind the answer

Doc Hudson becomes Lightning McQueen's mentor in Radiator Springs in Pixar's Cars.

Doc is the town's respected physician and judge, but he has a secret racing past. He was the Fabulous Hudson Hornet, a three-time winner of the Piston Cup before a crash ended his career and caused the racing world to move on without him.

Doc initially dislikes McQueen's arrogance and wants the newcomer to leave town. Their relationship changes as McQueen learns humility and Doc recognizes both the young racer's talent and his need for guidance. Doc eventually helps McQueen prepare for the Piston Cup finale.

Paul Newman voices Doc Hudson in Cars. Newman was himself an accomplished racing enthusiast and competitor, which gave the casting an especially strong connection to the film's subject. Doc's character is based on the real Hudson Hornet, a car famous for its “step-down” design and success in early stock-car racing.
