Route 66 inspired the road where Radiator Springs is located in Pixar’s Cars.
The fictional town sits along a once-important highway bypassed by a new interstate, leaving its businesses and residents isolated. This idea reflects the real history of U.S. Route 66, which connected Chicago and Santa Monica and became strongly associated with American road travel.
Pixar filmmakers researched Route 66 during development, visiting towns and landmarks along the road. The film transforms that research into the fictional Route 66 community of Radiator Springs, where Lightning McQueen meets characters including Sally Carrera, Mater, and Doc Hudson.
Route 66 is often called the “Main Street of America.” It was removed from the United States Highway System in 1985, but its cultural importance remains strong through tourism, historic markers, and popular culture.
