In Pixar's Cars, which famous retired racer is voiced by Paul Newman?

The story behind the answer

In Pixar's Cars, Paul Newman voices the retired racer Doc Hudson.

Doc Hudson is the town doctor and judge in Radiator Springs, but his past is revealed to be much more prestigious. He was once the Hudson Hornet, a celebrated race car and three-time Piston Cup champion. Newman, himself a famous actor and racing enthusiast, gave Doc a calm, authoritative voice that suits the character's hidden history.

The character is inspired partly by the real Hudson Hornet, a car associated with early NASCAR success. The film connects Doc's racing career to a crash that ended it and to his later disappointment when the racing world moved on without him. His relationship with Lightning McQueen develops from resentment to mentorship.

Paul Newman recorded Doc's dialogue before his death in 2008. Doc does not appear as a living character in Cars 2, but his legacy influences McQueen. Cars 3 prominently returns to that legacy, using Doc's training and memories as part of McQueen's effort to remain competitive.
